Cosmetic ingredient information at your fingertips – the COSMILE Europe app launches today

  • Last updated: November 30, 2023

30 November 2023, BRUSSELS – Today, Cosmetics Europe launched the COSMILE Europe app, a new entry point to access the information in the COSMILE Europe database, European ingredient database that provides easy access to reliable, verified and scientifically supported information on almost 30,000 ingredients used in cosmetics.

The information in the database helps European citizen understand why certain ingredients are in their cosmetic products, which properties they have and much more.

“As an industry we are committed to providing information on the ingredients in our cosmetic products in a simple and easily accessible way. Now with the COSMILE Europe app, with its new ways of searching and tracking ingredients, accessing this information has never been easier. We hope this tool will contribute to helping European citizens choose their cosmetic products.” – John Chave, Director General of Cosmetics Europe.

Available in 8 languages with more to come, the app offers several ways to easily get information on cosmetic ingredients. The user can search for ingredient information by scanning the ingredients list on the label of the product, search for information on an individual ingredient manually, or scan a product barcode to retrieve information about the product and its ingredients list. While this last feature is already available on the app, please note that it is not available for all products. As the app becomes established in each country, more products will become available moving forward.

Helpfully, users of the COSMILE Europe app will be able to keep track of the ingredients in cosmetic products that are of interest to them or to which they have an allergy confirmed by a dermatologist. To further personalise the app, users can create a list of favourite products from the cosmetics they have scanned to consult the products’ ingredients at any time.

The ‘Insights’ section will also provide information on how EU law ensures that cosmetics and their ingredients are safe, what makes sunscreen work and other answers to useful frequently asked questions about cosmetics and their ingredients.
